The SPIKE Prime distance sensor measures the distance to an object in front of it. It works using ultrasonic waves, so it is often called an ultrasonic sensor.

You've probably noticed that it resembles two eyes. That is no coincidence: one "eye" transmits the ultrasonic sound, and the other receives it! The transmitted sound travels forward until it hits an object, then reflects back to the sensor's second "eye." By calculating the time it took for the sound to travel, the sensor determines the distance to the object. The longer the time, the farther away the object is!
