In this video tutorial we try to move forward with a LEGO Mindstorms Robot Inventor robot and we try to keep a straight line using the Motion Sensor. Without entering into the details of the programming we demonstrate what is the behavior of the robot when trying to keep a straight line with the Motion Sensor while we are participating in a FIRST LEGO League competition.

This is the first video tutorial from the LEGO Education SPIKE Prime programming course in which we use a sensor, and we've selected to use the motion sensor. The Motion sensor allows us to detect how the robot turns in a 3-dimensional space-time continuum, or, to put it simply, we use it to move straight with the robot. That's it. We want to move straight - we use a sensor, and the Motion Sensor is a good choice.
In this program, we present an "MY BLOCK" that follows a line presented as a yaw angle from the robot's starting position. If the program acts differently when tested again, then the most likely problem is the direction the robot is facing, when starting the program. The goal of this course is to help you learn to program LEGO Robots using Scratch and make them behave consistently and reliably during competitions. As a language we use LEGO MINDSTORMS App Word Blocks which is based on Scratch. We look at a lot of concepts that could be used for FIRST LEGO League and World Robot Olympiad competitions - for example, how to follow a line fast, slow, in a smooth way, with 5 states. Also, how to align to lines, how to do double align, how to keep a straight line with a motion sensor.
Unfortunately, LEGO discontinued the robot series during the making of this course which is why it's kind of shortish. You could use the SPIKE Prime course for a more in-depth analysis.
In this video tutorial, we use the Unload Cargo Ship mission from FIRST LEGO League 2021 Cargo Connect robotics competition to demonstrate how we program the robot to keep a straight line while moving. Do we need that for this mission? Probably not, but we do it either way to demonstrate the solution in a fairly simple mission. The program uses the motion sensor to auto-correct the errors the robot is making while moving.
"Sometimes it works, sometimes it does not work" - this is the most common case in FIRST LEGO League competitions. In this tutorial, we demonstrate and discuss such a case where the first part of accomplishing the mission always works but the second part has about 60-70% success rate. The robot is not very consistent. Let's take a moment to see it and explain why so that we can resolve the problem in the next lesson.

In this video tutorial, we demonstrate a configurable attachment used for accomplishing a FIRST LEGO League 2021-2022 Cargo Connect mission called Sorting Center. The mission model has three cargo objects that are placed randomly. The attachment is configured before the run based on the configuration of the cargo objects. This attachment is also very powerful as it aligns and auto-corrects the errors that the robot is making by squaring the robot.
