TL. DR.
Disconnect the cables from the controller. Cut them with a knife or with scissors. Remove the controller.
"Disconnecting" the cables
Disconnect the cables from the default controller by cutting them. You can use scissors to cut the cables. Or a knife. You must cut them very close to the controller. On the pictures below you can see the can with default controller removed, the cables disconnected and the controller without cables on the right picture.

It changes through the years so it might take some time for you to find it as Raspberry PI, motor drivers, power banks and h-bridges.. they change. Note that the course was designed to be led by a teacher with a decent knowledge in embedded hardware and software. This, on the other hand should not stop you, if you are curious.
